Chenin Blanc - Nowhere else does it better
Share
Chenin Blanc is the cape’s signature white grape, making up the largest share of the country's white wine plantings. Originally from France’s Loire Valley, it has found a unique home in South Africa, where it thrives in diverse terroirs and produces a wide range of styles.
Key Characteristics:
Aromatic & Versatile – Flavours range from crisp green apple and pear to ripe tropical fruits like pineapple and guava.
Refreshing Acidity – Naturally high acidity gives it a bright, zesty profile, making it perfect for food pairing.
Varied Styles – Can be unwooded and fresh or oak-aged and rich, with some producers crafting age-worthy, complex expressions.
Why It Stands Out:
✅ Quality & Value – Offers world-class quality at a fraction of the price of French Chenin Blanc.
✅ Old Vines* & Innovation – Some of the world’s oldest Chenin vines are in South Africa, producing intensely flavourful wines.
✅ Food-Friendly – Pairs well with seafood, creamy dishes, spicy foods, and even sushi.
*Old vines are taken so seriously in the region that there is a province wide project that aims to work with producers to protect vines over 35 years old, of which the Chenin grape makes up a significant share. You can read more about this HERE.
